How To Jump Start Your Car

NJ Acura jumper cablesHaving your vehicle die and getting stuck somewhere is a fear for all drivers. Knowing what to do in that situation can help get you back on the road (and back home!) sooner than later. At Park Ave Acura, we’ve come up with a few tips to better prepare NJ Acura drivers for when things go wrong!

There are many reasons why a car could fail to start. For example, if the car is silent when you turn the key, you’ll need to check the battery terminal cable connections for corrosion. How do you do this? It’s quite simple; place the point of a screwdriver (with an insulated or wooden handle) between the connector and the terminal post, twisting it to lodge firmly. If the engine starts, you may need to clean or replace your cables.

If your vehicle makes a clicking noise but won’t start, it usually indicates a dead battery. If not, check the wiring from the starter for a loose connection. If the batter is indeed dead, it’s time to grab those jumper cables out of the trunk!

  • Find a vehicle to help you with the jump.
  • Make sure that both cars are in Park or Neutral with their ignitions shut off and emergency brakes on.
  • Remove the caps from both batteries and connect the cables; attach one of the red clips to the positive terminal on your battery and attach the other red clip to the positive terminal on the other car’s battery.
  • Attach one of the black clips to the negative terminal on the other car’s battery and attach the other black clip to an unpainted, metal surface on your car – make sure that it isn’t near the carburetor or the battery.
  • Try starting your vehicle.
  • If it starts, thank to the person for his or her help and drive off!

When you’ve gone through each step and your car still doesn’t start, it’s time to buy a new battery. You can find the right battery for your specific Acura model at our Acura service center in NJ.
